Planting guide

Follow the steps below to help plan & plant

1  why plant?
Figure out the reasons you want to plant for climate.
Do you want shade, food, green, fresher air,
less CO2, to support insects, to help animals and biodiversity?
Look around your area, is there a place you like and want to help grow or do you want to make more places like it?

2 Where to plant?
Where you plant will make a difference to what you plant and if you need to get permission. If you don’t have a space you can use you can ask people you know and reach out to:

your school
your community
local government

Is there a lawn that you would like to make a meadow, rain garden och plant a tree on?  Is there unused land that you would like to make greener? In urban areas there are community gardens, facade gardens and you can always start with potted plants.

3 What to plant?
Most importantly choose native plants and trees. (Try searching on google for “your location” and “native plants.”)

Ask around from others with gardens and shops to see if they can give you advice or help.

You can move or pick seeds and seedlings from places where they can’t keep growing (for example from places where they will be cut down or don’t have enough space).

4 how to plant? Join together and start small! What you don’t know someone else will or you can learn. You can always keep planting, growing and learning.

5 look after your plants
You can start small, so that your group can manage to keep your planting growing, it may need things like water, weeding, signs to help people understand and help look after it.

It is all a learning experience and can keep growing over time on its own or with more plants from you. You may inspire others to do the same.
